WARNER Brothers is suing an Indian film company over the title of its upcoming film Hari Puttar – A Comedy Of Terrors, claiming it is too similar to the Harry Potter franchise.
A spokeswoman for the cinema giant confirmed the lawsuit against Mumbai-based Mirchi Movies, which is due to release its film in India on 12 September.
Speaking about the lawsuit, Warner Bros spokesman Deborah Lincoln said: “Warner Bros values and protects intellectual property rights.”
Hari is a popular Indian name, while Puttar means “son” in Punjabi. Filmed on the Yorkshire Dales, Hari Puttar tells the story of a 10-year-old boy who moves to England with his parents and gets involved in a battle over a secret microchip.
Munish Purii, of Mirchi Movies, said: “In my opinion, I don’t think our title has any similarity or links with Harry Potter.” The case is being heard in Mumbai.
