THE Royal Opera House today unveiled details of a three-day festival aimed at luring a new "cool crowd".
Deloitte Ignite runs from 12 to 14 September and will feature more than live performance.
There will be a new public artwork by Julian Opie - famed for his paintings of Blur (pictured) - a "scent" experience by perfume-maker Jo Malone, chocolate tasting by Green and Blacks and a large-scale new show by Wayne McGregor Random Dance.
McGregor, resident choroegrapher of the Royal Ballet, has been charged with directing this inaugural festival, which ROH chief Tony Hall has said he hopes will "get that buzzy, cool crowd to come in". For information go to www.roh.org.uk/deloitteignite
What is it with 'cool' opera lately? This and also the Grimeborn opera festival? I read an interview with the producer of Grimeborn (here: http://www.spoonfed.co.uk/spooners/joe-34/london-theatre-346/) and he just makes it sound like opera for the masses is the next big thing. Honestly, you either like opera or you don't. This 'opera for all' is turning it into something that's not even opera any more :-/.
