Jay-Z has told how London is his favourite city and that he thinks the Big Smoke has a better approach to music than in the US.
Talking ahead of his gig at Hyde Park next week he also revealed that he enjoys gambling in private clubs in the West End and has a healthy appetite for the capital’s restaurant scene.
He said; “I’m a pretty big, almost a professional gambler. I’m not gonna say any names because that’ll mess it all up, but there’re these little private clubs you can go to in the West End where you can hang out and gamble and it’s pretty cool. And you know, I’m a foodie, so I’m always in search of the next good meal.”
The hip hop star, who is to make his controversial performance at Glastonbury this weekend, said: “I think in London - and I don’t wanna offend anybody in America, but this is a real statement - they still have the right approach to making music.
“In the US, people see it as a way to make money, they see it as a means to get out. It’s a hustle, which is great – nay way you can provide for your family that’s legal is fantastic. But it still feels like people make music to make music over in London.”
And he told Time Out magazine that Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Estelle were among the British artists he admired the most.
He said: “The aesthetic of it is different, and it’s my point of view. It’s not anything formulaic. Not ringtone. I don’t think you have ringtone rappers.”
