the chat Eugene Hutz
The Gogol Bordello frontman, who’s worked with Madonna and inspired Gucci, talks vodka and movie stardom
You’re known for your hardcore energy and doing vodka shots on stage. Are the two linked?
It’s a very hardcore kind of music we play. It requires a lot of concentration. It’s not just something that happens after three shots of Jagermeister. The energy comes from our passion and adrenalin.
How did you first get into music?
How do gypsies get into music? Gypsies are music.
But you’re world-famous now. Was it planned?
It really never meant anything to me. You’ll never find me or Gogol Bordello in a VIP section with bulls***ters. It has nothing to do with what we do.
You’ve worked with Madonna (in Filth and Wisdom). How did that happen?
She’d heard my music and liked it, so she called me and said she had this movie in her head and I had a month off before the tour.
You also starred in Everything is Illuminated with Elijah Wood.
It was a great experience. It wasn’t always pleasant, but what the f***. What great things have ever come out of being comfortable?
I heard Elijah Wood was dating a member of your band, Pamela Racine?
Yeah, it’s been going on for three years.
They’re still together?
Yeah. Are you from some kind of celebrity magazine? Oh my word. Is my next question
about Gucci?
Er…yes. How do you feel about being the fashion inspiration for them?
I don’t think anything of it. If some of my friends wanted me to make something, I’d also do it.
Any unfulfilled ambitions?
Many! There is a new album and I’m also writing a script to direct and star in my own movie.

Watch out New York!
SHE might have just launched her new range at Topshop, but Kate Moss seems to be losing her style originality.
This sounds like something we’d like to read: Girls Aloud are releasing their official biography which will be out in time for Christmas.
