Last night was busy busy! Fame and the indie rocker, irreconcilable foes or star-crossed lovers? That's the conundrum facing anti pop charters The Cribs who last night put on a rip-roaring show at the Kentish Town Forum to cap off their UK tour.
Sex on legs (if you're Kate Nash, his honey, that is) guiarist/vocalist Ryan Jarman and brother Gary (vocals/basss) lashed out 1:40 minutes of non-stop rock-carnage that at times called to mind The Killers imbuing the live show with an epic feel that's nowhere to be heard on the album. Other times their Strokesian pop sensibility gave way to the anarchic streak that clearly runs through their family tree.
Tearing out six-minute guitar riffs which saw the brothers Jarman head down, smashing their Fender necks together in a football huddle while other brother drummer Ross stood over them flaying his drumkit with strokes like a butcher cleaving a ham hock.
The crowd of 2,000 was wild for this band who've simmered under the radar for five plus years, and that clearly rankled Ryan who lambasted the attendees for, of all things, buying his album. Ryan rocked, but he's a bit of a sore winner.
